Human Rights Education
Human Rights Education constitutes an essential contribution to the long-term prevention of Human Rights abuses and represents an important investment in the endeavor to achieve a just society in which all Human Rights of all persons are valued and respected. Education in Human Rights is itself a fundamental Human Right and also a responsibility:
People who do not know their Rights are more vulnerable to having them abused and often lack the language and conceptual framework to effectively advocate for them. Growing consensus around the world recognizes education for and about Human Rights as essential. It can contribute to the building of free, just, and peaceful societies. Human Rights Education is also increasingly recognized as an effective strategy to prevent Human Rights abuses. Human Rights Education also promotes values, beliefs and attitudes that encourage all individuals to uphold their own rights and those of others. It develops an understanding of everyone's common responsibility to make Human Rights a reality in each community.
