The female prisoners had made a number of cultural items and handicrafts for the occasion and their work was displayed at an exhibition held inside the prison. The items were sold to raise funds for the Prison Welfare Union. In his address to the attendees, Mr. Tissa said that these prisoners are responsible women who made a wrong decision but they will be rehabilitated and integrated back into society.
Women's day was celebrated at the Raja Veediya Female Ward of the remand prison on the 08thof March 2012 with more than 90 prisoners attending the event. The theme of the day was 'Protect the female child". The principal guest of the celebration was Dr. Padma Alahakoon the Chief Doctor of the Pallekelle Indigenous Hospital. The event was organized by superintendent of the Bogambara prison, Mr. Tissa Jayasinghe, the chief jailor, Mr. Mahanama and Nandani Rajnayake of the female ward.
Family members of the remand female prisoners and sentenced prisoners were present at the event and a medical clinic was organized by the Kandy General Hospital for all present as a special event accompanying the days proceedings.
